pokémon TCG
Through Maverick Media, I’ve been lucky to work closely with the Pokémon Trading Card Game team on many expansions. That’s meant everything from big hero commercials (animation and live action) to social campaigns and paid media rollouts. Here are a few highlights from that journey.
SCARLET & VIOLET: BLACK BOLT & WHITE FLARE
Marking the final chapter of the Scarlet & Violet series for the TCG, we created an epic clash between the two flagship Pokémon for Gen 5.
We played on their Yin & Yang duality and peppered in biblical renaissance painting visual aesthetics.
Closing this chapter of Pokémon with a bang (pun intended).
SCARLET & VIOLET: OBSIDIAN FLAMES
The launch introduced the Terastallization phenomenon to the Trading Card Game, transforming it into an epic cinematic moment. The campaign elevated the new Pokémon form through animation, setting the visual tone that defined later expansions built around the mechanic.
A personal highlight for me was introducing the Unreal Engine where I previsualised the spot, check it out here.
SWORD & SHIELD: LOST ORIGIN
A major moment for the TCG, Lost Origin reintroduced the highly anticipated Giratina VSTAR, bringing with them the devastating Lost Zone mechanic. Huge for collectors and competitive players.
The campaign combined hero films, socials, and paid media that captured the sense of impending dread from the returning Lost Zone. A fan-driven launch that fuelled excitement across both casual collectors and competitive players worldwide.
POKÉMON TRADING CARD BATTLE ACADEMY
An aspirational campaign introducing the Battle Academy box set as the first step into competitive play. The story followed a new player’s journey from learning with family to making friends and finally competing, told through seamless match cuts and uplifting cinematic beats.
Virtual Production brought scale and polish to the visuals, making the experience feel both relatable and exciting.
SWORD & SHIELD: CHILLING REIGN
A campaign rooted in high fantasy, drawing on knights and kings to capture the majesty of Calyrex in both its Ice Rider and Shadow Rider forms. A high-fantasy campaign that crowned Calyrex as a majestic centerpiece of the set.
The legendary Galarian birds were teased through hero film, then expanded across socials and paid media, giving the campaign a cohesive feel that tied everything back to the set’s legendary scale.
